Egypt’s top 5 Ancient Egyptian monuments

Egypt’s top 5 Ancient Egyptian monuments
Ancient Egypt was one of the world’s greatest civilisations and left behind some incredible monuments – including the last remaining Wonder of the Ancient World.

If your trip to Egypt is based in Cairo or Luxor, you’ll be in a prime position to trace the footsteps of the Ancient Egyptians and witness some of their most spectacular landmarks with your own eyes.

Read on to discover the top 5 Ancient Egyptian monuments and where to find them.

5. Luxor Temple

On the east bank of the Nile in the city of Luxor lies the Luxor Temple – an Ancient Egyptian temple complex founded in 1400 BC. It’s made up of six great temples and the temple was dedicated to the Egyptian Gods Amun, Mut and Chons.

You’ll find the main temple complex within walking distance of the city and if you’re staying at Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, you’ll be just a five minute taxi ride away from one of the city’s most ancient monuments.

4. Step Pyramid of Djoser

Less than an hour outside of Cairo lies the Step Pyramid of Djoser – the first pyramid ever built by the Ancient Egyptians and the largest building of its time.

Built in the 27th century for the burial of Pharaoh Djoser by his senior advisor Imhotep, the burial chambers are actually underground in a maze of hidden tunnels that was probably designed to discourage thieves. Unfortunately, Djoser’s tomb was eventually plundered and all that remains now is his mummified left foot.

3. Valley of the Kings

Travel south down the Nile and you’ll find one of the most famous Ancient Egyptian burial sites – the Valley of the Kings. For nearly 500 years between the 11th and 16th centuries, 63 tombs and burial chambers were built for Egypt’s kings and privileged noblemen.

Each royal tomb is decorated with scenes from Egyptian mythology, which has helped historians decipher the beliefs and funerary rituals of the time. And while many have been opened and robbed over the centuries, Tutankhamun’s tomb remained the most intact.

2. The Great Sphinx

Built in approximately 2500 BC on the Giza Plateau, this is one of the largest, oldest and most recognisable monuments in the world. Questions still remain surrounding whose face it is modelled on, who built it and when, but despite the ongoing debate it still remains an icon of modern and Ancient Egypt.

1. The Great Pyramid of Giza

Finally, the number one Ancient Egyptian monument is without a doubt the Great Pyramid of Giza. Situated south-east of Cairo just across the River Nile, the Great Pyramid is the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World. It took twenty years to build using over 2 million blocks of stone, and is the largest pyramid in Egypt.

But here’s interesting fact to impress your friends with – nearby Khafre’s Pyramid does seem to be taller than the Great Pyramid but this is only because it’s built on a higher elevation.

If you’re staying at the Hilton Pyramids Golf Resort, you’ll be a twenty minute drive away from the Great Pyramid – so close you could even go there in the evening to watch the spectacular sunset over the pyramids and the desert.

So there you have the top 5 Ancient Egyptian monuments to visit on your next trip to Egypt. If you have any others you think we should add to the list then please let us know!
